Authorities have arrested an illegal immigrant for stabbing his wife and attempting to decapitate her in front of their daughters. The incident, which occurred just two weeks after the suspect illegally crossed the border, left law enforcement officers in shock.

According to Fox News, the suspect —identified as Baltazar Perez-Estrada— turned himself in on Monday morning when he entered the Carol Stream Police Department in Illinois and informed authorities that he had stabbed his wife, Maricela Simon Franco, 26.

Officers took him into custody and opened an investigation immediately. It was during the course of their investigation that they discovered the suspect had crossed into the U.S. from Mexico illegally.

He was then charged with alien inadmissibility, given a future court date, and allowed to continue into the U.S. According to Daily Mail, citing prosecutors on the case, the couple had an argument at their apartment. The argument later turned physical after Perez-Estrada discovered that his wife had a boyfriend.

According to the prosecutors, Perez-Estrada proceeded to stab his wife dozens of times in her neck, head, torso and hands before he attempted to behead her while their two children were present.

The couple’s two young daughters, who witnessed the gruesome attack, later told police that they saw their father hitting their mother with a knife.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement that prosecutors are working tirelessly to bring justice to the deceased.

“The extremely violent end to a young mother’s life is something that should touch us all. Domestic violence continues to be a scourge on society, claiming more than ten million victims a year in some form or fashion,” Berlin said. “In this case, the sad reality is that Maricela’s life has been reduced to a statistic of domestic violence due to the alleged actions of her husband, Baltazar Perez-Estrada. This brutal, senseless act of violence alleged against Mr. Perez-Estrada will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

Perez-Estranda was charged with five counts of First Degree Murder and was also charged with illegally being in the U.S. He is scheduled to be arraigned in court on April 25.
