Arguments GET HEATED As Kamala Harris Insists She Was Never The “Border Czar” That Media Said

Daily Report July 25,2024

Vice President Kamala Harris is no longer portrayed as the “border czar” by many of the same mainstream media outlets that billed her responsible for leading border policy in Joe Biden’s administration.

It started with an Axios report that claimed on Wednesday, “Kamala Harris never actually had” the title of “border czar.”

Shortly after news of the site changes, critics cited an April 2021 article on the same site that declared Harris was dubbed by Biden as border czar.

In response, Axios published an editor’s note admitting that “Axios was among the news outlets that incorrectly labeled Harris a ‘border czar’ back in 2021.”

But the rhetorical fight about whether Harris was “border czar” — a term Republican critics often used to make insinuation-suggestions that everything from her wasn’t really in charge, that the president himself must be enforcing open-door policies or worse — matters.

The Trump campaign is linking her to the administration’s border policy, an issue in which polling shows President Biden has struggled.

President Joe Biden appointed Harris in March 2021 to handle the root causes of migration from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Mexico.

He said at the time, “I’ve asked her, the VP, today — because she’s the most qualified person to do it — to lead our efforts with Mexico and the Northern Triangle and the countries that help — are going to need help in stemming the movement of so many folks, stemming the migration to our southern border.”

Along with Axios, Time released an article on Tuesday called: “Kamala Harris Was Never Biden’s ‘Border Czar.’ Here’s What She Really Did.”

“Harris was never put in charge of the border or made ‘border czar,’ immigration experts said. President Joe Biden tasked Harris with leading the administration’s diplomatic efforts addressing the “root causes” of migration in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras,” USA Today reported in its fact check.

Harris made her first trip as vice president outside of the United States to Guatemala, and on Monday she sent a direct message to migrants: “Do not come” while stressing that the administration seeks “to discourage illegal migration”.

Her portfolio also includes coordinating billions of dollars in potential U.S. investments across the countries of Central America in an effort to create jobs, combat corruption, and confront crime challenges that are driving migration from the region.
