GOP Senator Rise To Top Of Trump’s VP List

Daily Report May 25,2024

The race to become former President Donald Trump’s 2024 running mate took a dramatic turn after a GOP senator reportedly caught the former president’s eyes.

Reports emerged on Friday that Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) has risen to the top of Trump’s list for vice president.

According to The New York Times, the former president has privately told people that he views the GOP lawmaker as a reliable and effective communicator in cable news interviews.

“Mr. Trump has also praised Mr. Cotton’s Army service, which included deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, and the fact that he is a fellow Ivy League graduate,” The Times wrote.

Cotton’s office has not responded to the news. However, the lawmaker told Fox News in a Monday interview that only the former president knows those on his shortlist.

“I suspect only Donald Trump knows who is really on his short list,” Cotton said. “When we do talk, we talk about what it’s going to take to win this election in November — to elect President Trump to another term in the White House and elect a Republican Congress, so we can begin to repair the damage that Joe Biden’s presidency has inflicted on this country.”

The news comes after former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, who ran against Trump for the GOP ticket, announced her endorsement of the former president.

“I put my priorities on a president who’s gonna have the backs of our allies and hold our enemies to account,” Haley said during a speech at the Hudson Institute on Wednesday. “Who would secure the border, no more excuses. A president who would support capitalism and freedom. A president who understands we need less debt, not more debt. Trump has not been perfect on these policies, I’ve made that clear. Many, many times, but Biden has been a catastrophe. So, I will be voting for Trump.”

Following Haley’s endorsement of the former president, rumors began circulating that Trump might consider her his running mate.

News 12 political reporter Tara Rosenblum met with the former president following his historical Bronx rally to discuss Haley’s chance of becoming his running mate.

“Well, we have so many. I don’t, I don’t wanna do that. But we have so many,” Trump replied when Rosenblum asked if he would pick Haley. “You could take people like Ben Carson, you could take people like Marco Rubio, JD Vance … I mean, there are so many — Elise is doing a fantastic job. Um, but I could go on for quite a long time. We have many people who would do a really fantastic job.”
