Attorney General Merrick Garland had a day he’d rather forget after he faced off with Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-F) during a House hearing.
Garland appeared before the House Judiciary Committee, where he blasted lawmakers for suggesting that the DOJ was involved in former President Donald Trump’s Manhattan case.
However, Gaetz pressed Garland during questioning where he asked the attorney general if he would release all communications between his office and those of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, New York Attorney General Letitia James and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
“You’ve told us that it’s a dangerous conspiracy theory to allege that the Department of Justice is communicating with these state and local prosecutions against Trump,” Gaetz said. “You can clear it all up for us right now, will the Department of Justice provide to the committee all documents, all the correspondence, between the department and Alvin Bragg’s office, and Fani Willi’s office, and Letitia James’ office?”

Garland refused to grant the lawmakers’ wish, noting that his office does not control the offices of Bragg, James and Willis. Garland, after a short exchange between both men, noted that he would refer Gaetz’s request to the DOJ’s office of legislative affairs.
Gaetz responded to Garland’s response with fury, with the lawmaker insisting that Garland’s response is why people believe the DOJ was involved in Trump’s trial.

“You come in here, and you lodge this attack that it’s a conspiracy theory that there is coordinated lawfare against Trump and then, when we say, ‘fine, just give us the documents, give us the correspondence and then, if it’s a conspiracy theory that will be evident,’” Gaetz told Garland. “But when you say, ‘well, we’ll take your request and then we’ll sort of work it through the DOJ’s accommodation process’ then you are actually advancing the very dangerous conspiracy theory that you’re concerned about.”
