Democrats Call For Resignation Of Colleagues

Daily Report May 06,2024

Democrat lawmakers are calling for the resignation of two of their congressional colleagues following their recent encounter with the law.

As per a report on Conservative Archives, Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) and his wife, Imelda, are facing serious charges. The Department of Justice has indicted them over money laundering and an alleged $600,000 bribery scheme.

The DOJ accused the lawmaker and his wife of taking bribes from two foreign entities from December 2014 to November 2021. An oil and gas company owned and controlled by the Government of Azerbaijan and a bank headquartered in Mexico City allegedly paid $600,000 to shell companies owned by Imelda. In return, the lawmaker agreed to influence policies in the U.S. in favor of the two on foreign entities.

Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and his wife Nadine were also indicted on bribery-related charges in September. The DOJ indicted the senator and his wife on multiple crimes, including conspiracy to commit bribery, conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right and conspiracy to commit honest services fraud, according to Red State Of Mind Daily.

Following the Friday indictment, Cuellar and Menendez’s Democrat colleagues are calling for both men to resign. Leading that call was Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA), who issued a statement demanding the senator’s resignation.

“Senator Menendez should resign,” Fetterman said in a statement. “He’s entitled to the presumption of innocence under our system, but he is not entitled to continue to wield influence over national policy, especially given the serious and specific nature of the allegations. I hope he chooses an honorable exit and focuses on his trial.”

Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN), a former long-shot candidate for president who challenged President Joe Biden for the Democrat 2024 presidential ticket, called on both men to resign. Phillips also called on former President Donald Trump to end his campaign due to his indictment.

“While the bar for Federal indictment is high, trust in our government is low,” Phillips said in a post to X. “That’s why office holders and candidates under indictment should resign or end their campaigns, including Sen. Bob Menendez, Donald Trump, & Rep. Henry Cuellar.”
