A tragic discovery unfolded when former OpenAI researcher Suchir Balaji, aged 26, was discovered deceased in his San Francisco residence after a welfare check conducted by local law enforcement on November 26, as reported by The Mercury News.
Investigations by the medical examiner concluded that Balaji’s death was self-inflicted, with no indications of foul play detected.

/div>Before his passing, Balaji emerged as a vocal critic of OpenAI, raising concerns about potential copyright violations related to their ChatGPT technology.
Having joined OpenAI’s research team in 2022, the California-born professional quickly became concerned about the operational aspects of their AI-powered text and image generation systems.
His stance against the company gained prominence in October when The New York Times featured his perspectives on ChatGPT’s alleged fair use violations.
Just days before his death, on November 18, The Times submitted court documentation identifying Balaji as a key source of crucial evidence in their ongoing legal battle against OpenAI, according to The Mirror.
This story is sad.
Suchir Balaji who was called to testify against open ai was found dead. It’s being ruled a suicide. He doesn’t seem suicidal in his last post on 𝕏.

The Times’ lawsuit contends that both Microsoft and OpenAI have been inappropriately appropriating journalists’ work without proper consideration for ethical and legal standards.
In response to the tragedy, OpenAI issued a statement to CNBC saying, “We are devastated to learn of this incredibly sad news today and our hearts go out to Suchir’s loved ones during this difficult time.”
