The volunteer firefighter killed in an assassination attempt on Donald Trump will forever be remembered as a hero. His widow says former President Trump called to offer his condolences.
“He was very kind and said he would continue to call me in the days and weeks ahead,” Helen Comperatore wrote of Trump on her private Facebook page.
“I told him the same thing I told everyone else. He left this world a hero and God welcomed him in. He did not die in vain that day,” she said of her husband, according to a screenshot of the post.
The call from Trump comes after the widow opted against taking a consolation call by President Biden following her husband’s death.
“I didn’t talk to Biden,” she told The Post on Monday.
“I didn’t want to talk to him. My husband was a devout Republican and he would not have wanted me to talk to him,” she continued. However, she’s said she holds no “ill will” for the current president.
Her husband, a volunteer firefighter and father of two young girls sitting in the bleachers with his family at the rally that day, became collateral damage by the 20-year-old assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks.
The 50-year-old father yelled, “Get down!” then threw his body in the path of bullets to protect his family, before he was fatally struck by one such bullet, according to his wife.
Crooks also fired a bullet that grazed Trump’s ear while he was on stage and two other rally-goers were wounded before Secret Service agents shot and killed Crooks.
