US Navy squadrons returned home to their loved ones after a successful 9-month deployment fighting the Houthi rebels in Yemen.
Children in red white and blue outfits could be seen flinging themselves at service members waiting with open arms in images across Facebook this past Friday.
“All squadrons based at Naval Air Station Oceana that deployed with USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (@TheCVN69) to @USNavyEurope and @US5thFleet are now home,” the United States Fleet Forces Command posted on X.
The Navy aircraft carrier strike group performed critical missions against the insurgents in Yemen but also safeguarded military and commercial vessels on both sides of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Ships have been targeted by armed attacks throughout the region and in that part of Red Sea, leading US Central Command to repeatedly strike back.
The sailors aboard the Eisenhower, along with striking capabilities from the US Air Force flew seven pre-planned strikes into Houthi-controlled lands within Yemen, according to Military Times.
“I personally have been craving strange things,” Hill told the Virginian-Pilot newspaper. “I want to go to the gym not in uniform. Then, I want to go into Walmart immediately after working out … All the freedoms that we have, I’ll be taking advantage of that, and then things like waking up in my own bed and having a backyard.
“There’s a lot of amazing things on the boat and some amazing people, but at the same time I’m excited to get some quality time with my wife,” he added.
Ryleigh Hendershot, 10, was quoted by WVEC as saying “I’m waiting for my dad. We are very eager to see him and the anticipation is killing us.”
This was the group’s third extension of their deployment. “I’m super proud of the men and women for responding precisely when required to defend the freedom of navigation in the Red Sea,” Capt. “Starvin” Marvin Scott, the commanding officer of Carrier Air Wing 3, told the Virginian-Pilot.
The homecoming began a three-day period for the carrier strike group’s return, WVEC reported, with four ships returning and heading back to Norfolk — along with nine squadrons on board those carriers flying in as well when land-based aircraft.
