British Defence Secretary John Healey is set to meet with U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth in Washington this week, with discussions centered on achieving peace in Ukraine and other critical matters.
As he prepares for his Washington visit, Healey emphasized the enduring strength of the Anglo-American ‘special relationship,’ a bond forged through shared history, language, and democratic values that was cemented during World War II. The agenda includes discussions on the Ukraine conflict, the AUKUS nuclear submarine partnership between America, Britain, and Australia, and participation in the U.S. Marine Corps’ 250th anniversary celebration.
The timing of this diplomatic engagement is particularly significant, following recent high-profile meetings in Washington. British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s successful White House visit contrasted sharply with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s unsuccessful attempt to secure concessions from President Trump during their Oval Office meeting. Zelensky has since modified his stance, expressing readiness for peace negotiations. Trump continues to withhold aid to Ukraine pending Zelensky’s commitment to peace talks, while Sir Keir has emerged as a potential mediator between American and European interests, having established an unexpected rapport with Trump.

“Amid a period of growing global instability, the unique and special relationship between the UK and US is as strong as ever, underlined by a shared commitment to freedom and democracy,” Healey stated before his departure for meetings scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday. He acknowledged Trump’s position that European nations must increase their defense responsibilities, adding, “It is crucial that the UK and Europe step up further to take more responsibility for our security, and we are doing so. In the face of increasing global threats, we are cementing our ties as Nato allies, bolstering our national security and economic security, too.”
European responses to America’s call for increased defense spending have varied considerably. Britain’s approach, as articulated by Healey, acknowledges the changing dynamics and encourages fellow NATO members to increase their contributions. This stance has been well-received in Washington, despite minimal actual increases in British defense spending.

Some European leaders have chosen a different approach, implementing defense spending increases while publicly distancing themselves from Trump’s policies. This has led to an interesting paradox where some nations are effectively following Trump’s recommendations while framing their actions as opposition to American influence.
Regarding Ukraine, Zelensky’s letter to Trump, as revealed in his Congressional address, stated: “We do really value how much America has done to help Ukraine maintain its sovereignty and independence. Regarding the agreement on minerals and security, Ukraine is ready to sign it at any time that is convenient for you.” Trump expressed appreciation for this communication, marking a potential shift in the peace process that Healey aims to advance during his Washington visit.
