Two Planes Collide Mid-Air Leaves 300 Survivors

Daily Report January 02,2024

A commercial plane and a Coast Guard plane collided on Tuesday causing a fiery landing at Tokyo’s Haneda airport.

Live footage of the incident on public broadcaster NHK showed the Japan Airlines (JAL) (9201.T) Airbus (AIR.PA) A350 aircraft bursting into flames as it skidded off the runway. The blaze later got out of control and overwhelmed the best efforts of firefighters to get it under control.

Surprisingly, all 367 passengers and 12 crew survived the crash and were successfully evacuated from the plane. The Tokyo Fire Department said at least 17 of the people evacuated from the passenger plane suffered varying injuries. One of the survivors, who narrated their experience to a news agency, said they heard a loud sound before smoke and gas filled the plane’s cabin.

“I felt a boom like we had hit something and jerked upward the moment we landed,” a passenger on the Japan Airlines flight told Kyodo news agency. “I saw sparks outside the window and the cabin filled with gas and smoke.”

The collision, which occurred at about 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, left five of the six people aboard the Coast Guard plane dead. Only the captain of the Coast Guard plane —Bombardier-built Dash-8 maritime patrol plane— survived.

According to Reuters, the Coast Guard plane was heading to Niigata airport on Japan’s west coast to deliver aid and resources to survivors of the New Year’s Day earthquake that devastated the area.

A transport ministry official told a press conference that the passenger plane was attempting to land normally when it collided with the Coast Guard’s plane. There were no reports of engine failure or other problems.

Footage of the incident showed passengers in the plane screaming as smoke filled the cabin.

“The cabin crew must have done an excellent job. There don’t seem to be any carry-ons. It was a miracle that all the passengers got off,” said Paul Hayes, director of air safety at UK-based aviation consultancy Ascend by Cirium.
