During a recent Fox Business Network interview, President Trump explained his decision to temporarily suspend certain tariffs on Mexico and Canada until April 2. The interview, conducted by host Maria Bartiromo on Thursday and broadcast on Friday’s “Mornings with Maria,” revealed the President’s strategic considerations behind this economic move.

When questioned about market uncertainties and nervousness surrounding his tariff policies, Trump emphasized his desire to support both neighboring countries. He acknowledged the significant trade relationships, particularly noting how Mexico and Canada conduct substantial business with the United States, while American trade with Canada represents a smaller portion of the U.S. economy.

“Because I wanted to help Mexico and Canada to a certain extent. We’re a big, big country, and they do a lot of their business with us, whereas, in our case, it’s much less significant. We do very little with Canada by comparison. And I wanted to help the American carmakers, until April 2,” Trump explained.

The President elaborated on his decision, highlighting that after April 2, the policy would shift to a reciprocal arrangement where tariffs would mirror those imposed by trading partners. He specifically mentioned that this temporary pause was implemented with American automobile manufacturers in mind and cited the USMCA agreement as an additional factor in his decision-making process.

“April 2, it becomes all reciprocal, what they charge us, we charge them. It’s a big deal. But what they charge us, we charge them. But this is short-term and I felt that, for the good of the American carmakers and…the USMCA…I thought it would be a fair thing to do. And so, I gave them a little bit of a break for this short period of time,” Trump stated.
