President Trump took decisive action today to transform American education, signing an Executive Order that significantly reduces the Department of Education’s scope and returns educational control to state governments.
Despite education funding doubling since 1980, student performance has declined dramatically. Recent data shows eighth-grade students falling two grade levels behind in mathematics over the last decade, while reading scores have hit historic lows. Currently, over 70% of eighth-grade students perform below proficiency standards in both reading and mathematics, with nearly one-third of public school students lagging behind their grade level.
This reform will eliminate excessive federal regulation, allowing states to implement more targeted, innovative, and accountable educational approaches. The Executive Order enables crucial curriculum reforms and expands school choice opportunities, moving away from Common Core toward more practical, locally-focused education standards.

The changes will empower states to modernize high school education, integrating valuable work experience into curricula. This transformation will better prepare students for local career opportunities, apprenticeships, or higher education. As an example of successful vocational education, the National Governors Association recently toured Southeast Career Technical Academy in Las Vegas, where students graduate ready for careers ranging from construction and automotive work to culinary arts, cosmetology, and cybersecurity.
States have long faced obstacles from federal mandates and political divisions when attempting to implement school choice programs. This Executive Order removes these barriers, reducing bureaucratic oversight and expanding educational options for families. The reform builds upon President Trump’s previous educational initiatives, which included addressing DEI policies, protecting women’s sports, and promoting educational freedom.
The move represents a fundamental shift toward state-controlled education, emphasizing parental choice, transparency, and student success. This localized approach aims to create unprecedented educational opportunities for all students, regardless of their economic background or location.
By transferring educational decision-making power to those closest to students – their communities and families – this reform marks a significant step toward enhancing the educational preparedness of America’s next generation.
