Ryan Wesley Routh, the 58-year-old accused of attempting to assassinate Donald Trump at his West Palm Beach golf course, had written a disturbing letter months earlier expressing his intent to kill the former president, the Justice Department revealed on Monday.
The letter, addressed “To the World,” was allegedly left in a box at an unnamed individual’s residence in the months leading up to the September 15th incident, federal prosecutors stated in court.
“This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you,” Routh’s letter read. “I tried my best and gave it all the gumption I could muster. It is up to you now to finish the job; and I will offer $150,000 to whomever can complete the job.”
Routh’s note continued to express his disdain for Trump, stating, “Everyone across the globe from the youngest to the oldest know that Trump is unfit to be anything, much less a US president. US presidents must at bare minimum embody the moral fabric that is America and be kind, caring, and selfless and always stand for humanity.”
The handwritten note was only discovered after the recipient opened the box following Routh’s arrest, according to prosecutors. The box also contained several alarming items, including “ammunition, a metal pipe, miscellaneous building materials, tools, four phones,” and additional letters.
It remains unclear whether Routh anticipated the failure of his assassination attempt or was referring to another plot. In the letter, he criticized Trump’s foreign policy decisions, specifically his handling of relations with Iran: “He [Trump] ended relations with Iran like a child, and now the Middle East has unraveled.”
Routh was apprehended after a Secret Service agent noticed the muzzle of an AK-style rifle sticking through the shrubbery bordering Trump’s golf course and opened fire before the suspect could shoot. Routh dropped the rifle and fled in an SUV, leaving behind two backpacks, his firearm, and a GoPro camera.
Following Routh’s arrest, authorities uncovered alarming details about his movements. Court filings revealed that Routh had traveled from Greensboro, North Carolina, to West Palm Beach on August 14, and had been in the vicinity of Trump’s golf course several times between August 18 and September 15. A search of his vehicle revealed six cellphones, including one with a Google search history about traveling to Mexico from Palm Beach County.
Routh had also compiled a list of dates in August, September, and October corresponding with venues where Trump had appeared or was scheduled to appear, prosecutors noted. Additionally, a notebook found in his car contained criticism of Russia and China, along with notes about joining the war on behalf of Ukraine.
Details from Routh’s 2023 book, “Ukraine’s Unwinnable War: The Fatal Flaw of Democracy,” have also raised concerns. In the book, Routh wrote, “I must take part of the blame for the [person] that we elected for our next president that ended up being brainless, but I am man enough to say that I misjudged and made a terrible mistake and Iran I apologize.” He further added, “You are free to assassinate Trump as well as me for that error in judgment for the dismantling of the deal.”
The FBI is continuing its investigation into the assassination attempt, and federal prosecutors have filed a detention memo requesting that Routh remain in custody until his trial.
