A New Jersey elementary school teacher has been arrested after allegedly having sexual relations with a former student that resulted in the birth of a child. The abuse came to light when the victim’s father noticed striking physical similarities between his son and the teacher’s child on social media.

Laura Caron, 34, who taught fifth grade at Middle Township Elementary School, is facing multiple charges related to the sexual assault of her former student during the period they lived together from 2016 to 2020.

The relationship began after Caron taught the victim and his sibling in fifth grade. Following their time as students, she maintained a close connection with the family, who permitted their children to spend nights at her residence several times per week.

Eventually, the victim and his siblings moved in permanently with Caron, sharing living quarters in her home. During this period, prosecutors allege Caron engaged in inappropriate sexual contact with her former student, ultimately becoming pregnant and giving birth in 2019.

The situation remained undiscovered until December 2024, when the victim’s father observed remarkable physical resemblances between Caron’s child, himself, and his son through a Facebook post.

Further investigation revealed disturbing details, including testimony from the victim’s sister who recalled instances where her brother would start the night in their shared room but would later be found in Caron’s bed. She alleged the inappropriate relationship began when her brother was just 11 years old.

Investigators also learned that the victim’s brother had witnessed Caron sexually assaulting his sleeping sibling on one occasion.

The victim, now approaching 20 years of age, confirmed to authorities both the sexual relationship with his former teacher and his paternity of her child. He maintained contact with Caron until his father’s recent social media discovery.

Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffery Sutherland stated: “This arrest underscores the unwavering commitment of our office and law enforcement partners to protect the children in our community. Teachers hold a position of great trust, and the allegations in this case represent a deeply troubling breach of that trust. We will work tirelessly to ensure justice is served and to support the victim and their family throughout this process.”

Authorities arrested Caron at her residence, charging her with Aggravated Sexual Assault, Sexual Assault, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. She remains in custody at the Cape May County Correctional Facility without bond, awaiting her initial court appearance.

The Middle Township School District has responded by placing Caron on paid administrative leave and is actively cooperating with law enforcement’s ongoing investigation.
