Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer addressed Hamas’s role in the Palestinian conflict during multiple media appearances on Tuesday, expressing concern over what he perceives as inadequate coverage of the militant group’s actions.

During his appearance on “CBS Mornings,” Schumer discussed the recently failed ceasefire negotiations. “[T]he second round of the ceasefire is important because, first, it says Hamas, which I believe has been a large cause of the trouble, would disarm and Israel would remove its soldiers from Gaza. So, they were close. It fell apart. I don’t know the exact details, it happened overnight. But I think our government has to work really hard to bring them back to the table and get those hostages home. And I think it’s possible, because they were close at one point.”

Later that day, speaking on MSNBC’s “All In,” Schumer elaborated on his concerns about media coverage of the conflict. He emphasized Hamas’s tactical use of civilian infrastructure and quoted their leadership’s stance on civilian casualties. “[T]he late head of Hamas said, these Palestinians who are killed are necessary sacrifices, his words. The media doesn’t play it up and the world doesn’t realize the difficult position Israel is in, trying to make sure that Hamas doesn’t come back, because we know what Hamas would do again.”

The Democratic leader expressed frustration with what he views as unbalanced reporting of the conflict. While acknowledging Israel’s policy missteps, which he has previously criticized, Schumer pointed out the media’s focus on Palestinian casualties without adequate context about Hamas’s role. He noted that protesters often overlook Hamas’s actions entirely, leading to what he considers an incomplete narrative of the situation.
