The Kremlin issued stern warnings about potential consequences if Ukraine employs U.S.-supplied ATACMS missiles for deep strikes within Russian territory, while simultaneously expressing confidence in their ability to counter such attacks.

The reaction followed reports in Washington-based publications suggesting President Biden would authorize Ukraine to use ATACMS missiles against targets inside Russia, marking a shift from previous restrictions limiting their use to Russian targets within Ukraine’s borders.

Ukrainian military strategists view the ability to strike within Russia as crucial, believing it would enable them to neutralize Russian military assets before deployment. However, earlier limitations were imposed due to concerns that using American weapons against Russian territory could draw the U.S. into direct conflict.

Leonid Slutsky, who heads the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, warned that “American missile strikes deep into Russian regions will inevitably lead to a serious escalation, which threatens to have much more serious consequences.” He suggested Biden’s administration would be leaving Trump’s team to manage not just the Ukraine conflict but also the challenge of preventing global confrontation.

Slutsky further cautioned that permitting such strikes would constitute “direct US participation in the military conflict in Ukraine. Which will inevitably entail the harshest response from Russia, based on the threats that will be created for our country.”

Former air force commander Viktor Bondarev projected confidence in Russia’s defensive capabilities, claiming thorough knowledge of Ukrainian logistics and suggesting ATACMS missiles would become routine targets. However, Ukraine’s track record of successful improvised strikes deep within Russia raises questions about such assertions.

Senior Kremlin officials referenced Putin’s September 12th statement, where he indicated such strikes would fundamentally alter the conflict’s nature and effectively place NATO nations at war with Russia. His spokesman Dmitry Peskov had emphasized these words were “extremely clear, unambiguous and admits of no dual interpretations.”

Despite Russia’s forceful rhetoric, their credibility has diminished following numerous unfulfilled “red line” warnings throughout the conflict. Western nations have continued providing increasingly sophisticated military equipment to Ukraine, from tanks to fighter jets, despite similar threats of escalation.

Dmitry Medvedev, former Russian President and Prime Minister, maintained the pattern of dramatic warnings, threatening nuclear strikes on Western cities and predicting Russia’s potential collapse into civil war if Ukraine reclaims its territory. He painted a stark picture of “Tens of millions of victims. The death of our future. The collapse of everything in the world.”
