Fans and observers were in shock as famous Killer Mike was escorted out of the Grammy Awards by the police moments after securing three gongs.

The 66th Annual Grammy Awards took an unexpected turn as famous rapper Michael Santiago Render, better known by his stage name Killer Mike was arrested moments after he won three awards.

Video footage showed the rapper in handcuffs, being led through the Crypto.com Arena by a police officer. However, in a post on social media, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) reported that Killer Mike was arrested on a misdemeanor battery charge and that he was being released.

The rapper’s lawyer confirmed to a media outlet that Killer Mike was released.

“He’s out and will be celebrating his sweep tonight,” the lawyer said.

According to Daily Caller, the rapper had just received the award for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for “Scientists & Engineers.” The song features other notable artists, including Andre 3000, Future and Eryn Allen Kane.

The song beats Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar’s “The Hillbillies,” Black Thought’s “Love Letters,” Coil Leray’s “Players,” and Drake and 21 Savage’s “Rich Flex” in the best rap performance race.

He also received the award for Best Rap Album for “Michael,” presented in the pre-show. The album beat Doja Cat’s “Attention,” Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice and Aqua’s “Barbie World’ and Lil Uzi Vert’s “Just Wanna Rock”.

While accepting one of the awards, the rapper reminisced on making it in the music industry ever since releasing his first album, “Monster,” in 2003.

“As a kid, I had a dream to become a part of music, and that 9-year-old is excitedly dancing and frightened inside of me right now,” he said. “The only thing that limits your age is not being truthful about your age or what you’re doing.”

According to multiple reports, the last time the rapper received a Grammy was in 2003, when his collaboration with American hip-hop duo Outkast won Best Rap Performance.

Daily Mail reports that the rapper has been politically active and fully supporting Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT), Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) and Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA).
