Moments after announcing he would not seek re-election, former Vice President Joe Biden took the stage at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) and gave a passionate and tearful speech.
Biden’s speech — which came after a delay and ultimately aired outside of prime time, with him speaking before the convention to formally nominate Vice President Kamala Harris as his Democratic ticket partner – was full of heartfelt language.
“America, I love you!” said Biden, 81, dabbing his eyes after an introduction from his daughter, Ashley Biden.
The crowd — chanting, “Thank you, Joe!”
In a speech that lasted almost 51 minutes, Biden also paid tribute to Vice President Harris as well: “Thank you, Kamala, too.”
The cheers of the crowd continued as he said it. He adds, “I’ve got five months left of my presidency and I have a lot to do. I intend to get it done.”
Biden said in his speech that “It’s been the honor of my lifetime to serve as your president. And I love the job, but I love my country more. And all this talk about how I’m angry at all those people who said I should step down, it’s not true.”
He also lauded Harris, saying that his decision to make her as his running mate in 2020 was “the best decision I made in my whole career.”
After Biden finished speaking, Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, took the stage with him as well as his son Hunter’s family in a tableau that was like an altar call from a nomination celebration.
The acceptance speech, which was originally scheduled to begin at 9:50 p.m. local time began three hours later after long warmup speeches by the likes of Hillary Clinton and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), aired live from Charlotte, N.C., for just over an hour before concluding around 10:27 p.m. local time.
Biden did not appear to show much cognitive decline during the speech, however he referred to his age saying: “I’m so damn old,” and made a misstep by stating at one point that “I wrote a peace treaty for Gaza.”
In his remarks, Biden noted his pride over achieving a number of legislative victories in the past year including passing a $1.2 trillion omnibus bipartisan infrastructure law focusing on traditional projects like repairing crumbling roads and bridges and more.
Family members also paid poignant tribute to Biden throughout the evening. Ashley Biden, his daughter called him the “OG girl dad” and hailed as one of the most consequential leaders ever in history.
