Paraguayan Swimmer Luana Alonso RETIRES SUDDENLY And Is Asked To Leave Olympic Village

Daily Report August 05,2024

At the Paris Olympics, Paraguayan swimmer Luana Alonso had quite a journey.

It comes after the 20-year-old swimmer called time on her career following a dismal showing in the women’s 100m butterfly semi-final in July. The Sun subsequently reported on Monday that Alonso was told to leave the Olympic Village for making an unsuitable atmosphere.

Larissa Schaerer, the head of Team Paraguay said in a statement published by AP: “Her presence is creating an inappropriate atmosphere within Team Paraguay.”

“We thank her for proceeding as instructed, as it was of her own free will that she did not spend the night in the Athletes’ Village.”

Even after her elimination Alonso was still living in the Olympic Village. With Paraguayan media said to have reported that Alonso went to Disneyland instead of backing up her teammates, the country’s Olympic leadership are believed not to be best pleased.

Alonso, in tune up mode finished sixth in her heat with a time of 1:03.09 slower than the time that won her bronze medal at Tokyo Olympics three years ago (1:00.37).

“it’s official! I’m retiring from swimming, thank you all so much for your support! Sorry Paraguay ♥️ I just have to say thank you,” Alonso shared on social media.

“I gave you part of my life and I wouldn’t change that for anything in the world because I lived the best experiences of my life, you gave me thousands of joys, friends from other countries that I will always carry in my heart, unique opportunities. It’s not goodbye, it’s see you soon,” Alonso continued.

A successful 2023 for Alonso saw her post lifetime bests in both the 100m and 200m fly as well as in the NCAA championships.

Alonso has not yet commented on why she left the Olympic Village.
