A group of anti-Israel protesters interrupted former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s Tuesday night appearance on CBS’ “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”
Pelosi, who traveled to Chicago for the Democratic National Convention, taped a live interview with Colbert at the Auditorium Theatre, nearly three miles away from the United Center, where the majority of convention events have taken place.
The 84-year-old California Democrat was promoting her new memoir, “The Art of Power,” when the conversation turned to the Israel-Hamas war and the violent negotiations for peace.
This is when a protester in the audience screamed: “Speak of it on the show!” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Colbert took a break from the show due to the outburst and told the crowd that he would ask her to respond after the commercial break. Later during his show back from the commercial, Pelosi told the reporter a response about the cease-fire.
“We just got word earlier today that Israel had agreed to the cease-fire agreement. We’re hoping Hamas will too. But it takes me to the point of saying to you, ‘War has no role in a civilized society,’” Pelosi said out of break.
“You have to learn more about trust and peace and learning about each other rather than to have a conflict resolved by war,” Pelosi said as another protester shouted from the audience.
Colbert then mentioned that Pelosi’s answer was “unsatisfying to some people” as he was cut off during another round of protester’s shouting.
“Will you listen to her response,” Colbert pleaded.
“They said the United States should have no role in supplying Israel arms to kill the people of Gaza,” Colbert explained to Pelosi.
Pelosi’s show occurred on Monday following her helping at the Democratic National Convocation. Pelosi was excited about the occasion. The former House Speaker begrudgingly participated in a chorus of “We love Joe” according to Fox News.
Pelosi previously slammed President Biden for his potential bid for re-election, suggesting that it would stanch Democrats’ odds of maintaining tight leadership.
“Sometimes you have to take a punch for the children,” she told CNN. “I did what I had to do.”
