The confirmed killings of six more hostages in Gaza is a nightmare for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, whose re-election campaign was derailed by the discovery of six Israeli hostages this past Sunday.
The families are calling on Mr. Netanyahu to press harder for a cease-fire deal with Hamas. A new poll from the Israel Project showed Palestinian Authority President Abbas received only five percent support among likely voters.
One of the bodies found in Rafah on Saturday was that of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, a dual US-Israeli citizen. The American held in Gaza is one of four believed to be alive and three confirmed dead.
The families said: “Hersh’s tragic cold-blooded murder, only months after we were all able to see his face when Hamas released a hostage video of him for nothing other than vicious reasons.”
At a memorial service in Manhattan, the families pleaded with their politicians once more for a cease-fire to increase hope that hostages still alive will be returned.
“This shows more evidence of Hamas murdering captives in prison,” they added.
Talks about a cease-fire have been stuck for months. Netanyahu has pledged to fight until Hamas is beaten, while Hamas insists Israel must stop its assault and lift a seven-year blockade of the Gaza Strip in exchange for peace.
A White House source has said President Biden is vehemently opposed to an Israeli invasion of Rafah — it’s a “red line” that could affect US aid.
Biden also hit-out at Hamas, saying: “Let’s be clear – none of this is justified. And any effort to shift the responsibility from where it belongs — in fact, turn anywhere away — I find that despicable.”
Israel’s government later confirmed that the six hostages found – Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Ori Danino, Eden Yerushalmi, Almog Sarusi, Alexander Lobanov, and Carmel Gat – had been killed within minutes of being uncovered.
Their deaths have since provoked anger across Israel and calls for action, including a planned strike by the country’s largest labor union over how authorities handled the crisis.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump attacked the Biden administration over the deaths, saying: “They have blood on their hands!” on Truth Social.
Those deaths have prompted renewed discussion of Netanyahu’s approach and the terms for a cease-fire. Fighting between Hamas and the IDF, meanwhile, has escalated — driving Netanyahu to blame Hamas for disrupting negotiations while Defense Minister Yoav Gallant issued a chilling warning that further military actions could result in more fatalities among captured soldiers.
The families of the hostages & supporters keep pushing for answers as pressure mounts on the Israeli authorities. Stephanie Benshimol, one of the Manhattan vigil organizers said: “everybody come home now — bring the dead bodies back to bury properly and send those who are alive here on Earth already with their family.
