Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden is confronting a second federal trial in 3 months — this one over failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes as he allegedly spent cash on strippers and pornography. A jury will be seated on Thursday in a Los Angeles federal court for the trial.
Local prosecutors intend to call approximately 30 witnesses that include a stripper paid by Biden and an individual who will say he spent $30,000 on pornography while dodging taxes in tax years from 2016-2019, CNN reported.
Jury selection is close to wrapping up, and attorneys are likely to present opening statements on Monday.
Neama Rahmani, a Los Angeles trial lawyer and former prosecutor who is not involved in the case said “There’s really no chance for him on his merits. So, for his attorney to walk away from that opportunity is a big mistake.
Biden himself had been on the verge of a plea deal for his tax case and another gun matter that would’ve spared him time behind bars last year. But the agreement dissolved when Biden’s team insisted on blanket immunity, a term that special counsel David Weiss’ office was unable to agree to and which the local judge could not approve.
Over the summer, a Delaware jury found Biden guilty of three charges related to claiming he had not used drugs when buying his gun. The trial included testimony from his exes, including Hallie Biden, the widow of Hunter’s late brother Beau with whom he had a relationship and detailing his crack cocaine addiction.
In the present tax evasion case, a defense has galvanized against evidence of Biden’s alleged expenditures on strippers and pornography gets through, suggesting it is purely character assassination. Prosecutors, however, have countered that the information is relevant to show Biden could not legitimately claim these expenses as business deductions.
One reads: “Any tax crimes that Biden may have committed were not done intentionally and are, in a weird way, the product of his crack cocaine addiction. They also point out that Kevin Morris, who they call his pause-brother,” has settled some of the contractors concerning tax debt.
The trial is set for four days, but U.S. District Judge Mark Scarsi — appointed to the bench by former President Donald Trump — said he will rule on evidence as it’s presented during the proceedings.
The judge also blocked the defense from calling an expert witness to testify about Biden’s substance use. Yet Judge Scarsi has also sided with the defense on other fronts, deciding that prosecutors cannot suggest Biden violated foreign lobbying laws or accuse Joe Biden having committed wrongdoing when he was vice president for Barack Obama.
Biden is facing up to 25 years behind bars.
