Harris Paints Herself As Tough On Border

Politics August 30,2024

In a recent interview with CNN, Vice President Kamala Harris bragged about her record on border security, which she claims is tougher on illegal immigration than that of former President Donald Trump. That assertion comes in light of a historic surge in illegal immigration she helped oversee within the Biden-Harris administration.

It was Harris’s first interview since becoming the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee. She struggled to explain why her administration took so long to institute draconic asylum restrictions along the southern border.

CNN host Dana Bash, who conducted the interview, asked why such a policy would take three-and-a-half years. In response, Harris launched into touting how her work on addressing the “root causes” of migration resulted in fewer immigrants coming from specific regions of the Americas.

She had attributed it to “historic investments by American businesses in that region,” a remark which many would consider very debatable.

Contrary to Harris’s claim, illegal immigration has in no way diminished. According to former Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf, any slight decline in numbers can be more appropriately attributed to extreme summer heat, which discourages migrants from making a dangerous journey, and new immigration programs that mask the true number of illegal crossings.

In what was seemingly politics of pointing fingers, Harris, on her part, countered that Trump was to blame for killing an otherwise pending border bill in the Senate out of political expediency. In fact, the Republicans rejected the bill outright, citing the view that it would amount to the legalization of illegal immigration. The Republican senator who had begun working with Democrats on the bill pulled out his support.

Harris’s immigration record has raised eyebrows before. She said she’d eliminate private health insurance in favor of a government-run plan, and it would include coverage for illegal aliens. She also said in a tweet back in 2017 that individuals who cross the U.S. border are not criminals, even though crossing into the U.S. is a federal crime.

Harris also touted her background as Attorney General of California, saying she is the only candidate in the race who has prosecuted transnational criminal organizations involved in trafficking guns, drugs, and human beings.

In her words, “I’m the only person in this race who actually served a border state as attorney general to enforce our laws. And I would enforce our laws as president going forward.”
