Details of the Recall
Ford is recalling more than 148,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to critical issues in brake systems and software. The recall impacts the 2017–18 Ford F-150, Ford Expedition, and Lincoln Navigator models. Owners of these vehicles face risks stemming from compromised brake functions and potential software errors affecting electronic management systems. Ford is responding with measures to ensure these defects are rectified swiftly.
The significant issue concerns a brake fluid leak affecting about 123,611 vehicles. This defect, found in the brake master cylinder, allows brake fluid to leak into the brake booster, impairing braking performance. This can lead to reduced braking function, increasing the stopping distance and elevating the crash risk. The company is ensuring that repairs include the replacement of defective parts like the master cylinder and brake booster.
Additional Software Concerns
Ford has identified an additional defect in approximately 24,655 2025 Explorer models, involving the powertrain control module (PCM). The PCM issue could lead to unexpected resets during driving, potentially damaging the park system or causing the engine to stall. These failures highlight a pressing need for software updates to ensure vehicle reliability and safety.
“The powertrain control module (PCM) may reset while driving, which can damage the park system or cause an engine stall.” – National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Ford initiated the recall per protocol number 25S37, assuring customers that dealers are prepared to resolve these issues at no cost to owners. Vehicle owners will receive notification by mail starting April 28, encouraging them to visit local dealerships for inspections and necessary repairs. Notifications for registered owners are to be completed by May 26.
Owner Actions and Guidance
Owners should promptly use Ford’s Recall webpage or the FordPass App to verify their vehicle’s status using the VIN. Alternatively, this information can be checked on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website. Keeping informed ensures that any required actions are taken without delay, maintaining vehicle performance and safety.
“The auto safety regulator emphasized that dealers are required to replace affected parts, such as the master cylinder or brake booster, at no cost to the vehicle owners.” – The auto safety regulator.
Ford confirms no injuries related to these recalls have been reported, and the company is not currently facing legal action over the matter. This commitment to addressing such defects reflects Ford’s dedication to quality and customer safety. As these recalls align with previous safety campaigns, including issues with Ford diesel-engine trucks and other vehicle models, transparency remains central to Ford’s customer relations strategy.
