The 14-year-old accused of murdering four people at Apalachee High School in Georgia on Wednesday, Colt Gray, was already known to the FBI for a year from an online school shooting-threats investigation.
According to the FBI’s Atlanta field office Friday, Gray had been named as a suspect by local authorities when they first announced his case in May 2023.
The FBI said it received multiple anonymous tips in May 2023 regarding possible violence planned at a specific school. It also contained some disturbing posts with pictures of firearms, and they received this advice. Afterward, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office interviewed Gray — 13 at the time just like his father.
Gray’s father also told police at the time of the investigation that there were hunting rifles in their home but said his son could not have unsupervised access to them. Gray, though, denied any threats and said the false rumor — he had plans for a school shooting if ever suspended or expelled from Boyd County — was ridiculous.
Authorities initially found no probable cause to take action against Gray, but the FBI said he was placed on a watch list for local schools.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey indicated that the threats against 2023 students are part of what authorities are looking at to determine any possible link between Wednesday’s deadly shooting at Apalachee High School.
“This is not recent. This is in the past, but we wanted to bring that to your attention because we are pursuing that, working with the FBI on this in any connection to that incident that could be connected to today’s incident as well,” Hosey told reporters in a Wednesday night press briefing.
Hosey also confirmed that Gray’s family had previous contact with children services in the area. “Looking at this avenue too to see if that ties into today’s incident,” he said.
The shooting began at about 10:30 a.m. when Gray reportedly fired an AR-type gun at the high school. Mason Schermerhorn and Richard Aspinwall, both 14-year-old students; Christian Angulo a freshman who was about to turn 15 on Aug. Another nine people, cable special-education math teacher David Phenix were injured and transported to local hospitals.
According to Hosey, Gray “immediately surrendered” when approached by two school resource officers and was placed under arrest. It was not clear what prompted the shooting and it remained under investigation, he said.
Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said he does not know why it happened. We may never know.” Gray is expected to be charged as an adult with murder.
“These are our neighbors. These are our friends. And this community is hurting today. And I would just ask all Georgians and all Americans to continue to keep these families, these educators and these students in your thoughts and prayers,” Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said.
