Representative Mike Waltz (R-FL) said Wednesday that the 20-year-old suspect who tried to kill former President Donald Trump at a Butler, Pennsylvania rally on July 13 had used encrypted messaging accounts in countries around the world.
The revelation came from Waltz during a press conference in Chicago on Wednesday as the Congressional task force investigating the incident continues to determine how Russian agents executed an infiltration of U.S. House and Senate computers last week, hacking one computer click at a time while controlling others using supercomputers stationed within Russia’s Far West Sector to do so.
While Proctor said the investigation had not disclosed much else of Thomas Matthew Crooks’ use of encrypted messaging accounts, it was discovered he used platforms operating from Belgium, Germany, and New Zealand.
“Why does a 19-year-old kid who is a health care aide need encrypted platforms not even based in the United States, but based abroad, where most terrorist organizations know it is harder for our law enforcement to get into? That’s a question I’ve had since day one,” Waltz told reporters at the Trump Hotel in downtown Chicago.
CNN also reported that the assassination attempt came after U.S. authorities were warned of an Iranian plan to kill Trump before he left office. The Trump campaign, Secret Service, and the Biden administration have been made aware of the threat in recent weeks, but questions remain about how that information slipped through at Saturday’s rally.
Trump responded to Iran’s alleged plot to assassinate him, writing on Truth Social, “If they do ‘assassinate President Trump,’ which is always a possibility, I hope that America obliterates Iran, wipes it off the face of the Earth — If that does not happen, American Leaders will be considered ‘gutless’ cowards!”
The House revealed a 13-member task force of seven Republicans and six Democrats last month to examine the shooting. Leaders from both the Secret Service and FBI have been summoned to appear before House and Senate committees in coming weeks for questioning on why they didn’t stop pro-Trump supporters as they breached security perimeters during a rally assembled by Trump.
A camera caught Crooks on the rooftop at just 130 yards from where Trump was speaking. He aimed for his head and fired eight shots, one of which hit in Trump’s right ear. Sadly, a bullet also struck and killed Trump supporter and firefighter Corey Comperatore. The man was shot while trying to intervene in the situation and two other rally attendees were wounded by rounds fired from Dutch’s gun, identified as David Dutch and James Copenhaver.
