The Trump campaign has turned up the heat against Vice President Kamala Harris, slamming her past backing of taxpayer-funded transgender surgeries for convicts and illegal immigrants in a new political ad.
The ad, “Nonsense,” begins with the narrator saying, “Kamala backs taxpayer-funded sex change surgery for prisoners.” However, it reads: “Even the liberal media was shocked Kamala supports taxpayer-funded sex changes for prisoners and illegal aliens,” before ending with, “Kamala’s for they/them. President Trump is for you.”
Critics have gone after the California Democrat on this issue based on a 2020 American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) questionnaire in which Harris expressed her support for taxpayer-funded gender reassignment surgeries “for those in need, including for prisoners”. and individuals held at immigration detention centers. Harris felt use of executive powers would be in order since her plan to “mandate any necessary surgical care” through the government-run system only applies to transgender and non-binary people who depend on the state for medical reasons, such as prisoners and those in immigration detention.
Asked whether she supports a Biden administration policy that would enable federal prisoners and detainees to receive care for gender transition — including surgical care — while incarcerated or detained, Harris responded: “Transition care is serious medical treatment, and I will instruct every federal agency responsible for providing medical services to provide transition care,” she said.
In a 2020 interview with the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) Action Fund, Harris also pointed to her record as California’s attorney general. Never one to mince words, Caitlyn told Diana Limongi about how she served as “the woman who was working behind the scenes on that issue with the California Department of Corrections where every transgender inmate in this state prison system would have access to not only medical care… but also sex reassignment surgery” and even after leaning into her role as a voice for those who were discriminated against due to their gender identity, there weren’t any new opportunities being offered.
Media headlines touting her backing of the policies are featured in a voicing-over montage walking voters through her prior comments in a Trump campaign ad. Instead the ad ends with a 2017 headline that plays to Trump’s strong suit (and his focus): “Trump: Lower taxes, bigger paychecks for workers.”
With the recent Trump, Harris debate, the issue of transgender surgeries also popped back up. Trump claimed that Democratic nominee Joe Biden and Harris will put an end to the death penalty, just so she could “give transgender prisoners taxpayer-funded gender-reassignment surgery.”
Also, during a July interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham Trump was asked about his pronouns of choice. That is, his response was: “I have no — I don’t want pronouns.”
In a response, the Harris-Walz campaign cited Harris’s comments regarding those past positions The Post reached out to have quoted for this article.
Harris was criticized during her abortive 2020 presidential campaign for numerous leftward positions she took, although she has shifted many of those or backed away from them all together. A county-wide ban on plastic straws, what she thinks about fracking (extra salient right now in Pennsylvania), Medicare for All, and a federal jobs guarantee. She has also walked back her recent statements on the prospect of mandatory gun buybacks and the decriminalization of illegal border crossings.
With the Nov. 5 election just around the corner, neither the Trump nor Harris campaign can afford to rest on their laurels. Trump has said he does not expect to face Harris in a debate again before the election, though Republican vice presidential nominee Ohio Sen. JD Vance is due to square up against Democratic nominee Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz on the CBS News-hosted event Oct. 1.
