In response to former President Trump’s recent endorsement of Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) for Florida governor, current Governor Ron DeSantis expressed his reservations during a Tampa Bay news conference.
When questioned about Trump’s endorsement, DeSantis emphasized the importance of focusing on achievements in Florida, suggesting that attention should be directed toward securing victories at higher levels. He pointedly remarked that Donalds had not participated in any of Florida’s recent triumphs over progressive initiatives.
The conversation took an unexpected turn when DeSantis brought up the possibility of his wife Casey as a potential gubernatorial candidate. Highlighting his own record-breaking victory margin as a Republican governor in Florida, DeSantis expressed confidence that Casey could surpass even his impressive performance.

According to The Tampa Bay Times, Trump’s endorsement of Donalds, should the Naples Republican choose to run in 2026, has created early ripples in the gubernatorial race, well before any official campaigning begins. This early endorsement comes as DeSantis faces term limits, preventing him from seeking another term.
During the Tampa press conference, DeSantis’s response to a Tampa Bay Times reporter suggested that Donalds might be better suited continuing his work in Washington rather than pursuing the governorship of Florida.

“We’ve achieved victories in Florida. We need to start achieving those victories up there,” DeSantis noted. “You got a guy like Byron — he just hasn’t been a part of any of the victories that we’ve had here over the left these last years.”
Regarding his wife’s potential candidacy, DeSantis stated, “I won by the biggest margin that any Republican has ever won a governor’s race here in Florida. She (Casey) would do better than me.”
