Heavy-handed rhetoric from Democratic leaders and escalating acts of violence have marked a concerning trend in the aftermath of Elon Musk’s appointment as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). While Democrats have successfully tarnished Musk’s public image, their broader political objectives remain unfulfilled.

Musk’s transformation into a controversial figure accelerated after his dramatic image change, featuring dark attire and eccentric behavior. His approval ratings have plummeted into the mid-30s, accompanied by a significant decline in Tesla’s stock value and his personal wealth, reportedly dropping by $132 billion in 2025.

Despite these personal setbacks, DOGE’s efficiency drive continues unabated. The agency has reduced federal employment by over 100,000 positions, cut billions in spending, and modernized government systems. President Trump, while publicly advocating for a more measured approach to government reduction, remains largely unaffected by the controversy surrounding his appointee.

Democratic lawmakers have intensified their rhetoric against Musk. At a February rally, Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) called Musk a “Nazi nepo baby … a godless, lawless billionaire,” and promised he would face opposition “in the court, in Congress, in the streets.”

At the same rally, Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ) said of DOGE’s efforts, “Goddamn it shut down the Senate! We are at war!”

This heated rhetoric has coincided with a wave of violence targeting Tesla properties. In South Carolina, 24-year-old Daniel Clarke-Pounder was arrested for firebombing Tesla chargers. In Colorado, Justin Thomas Nelson attacked a Tesla dealership with similar explosive devices. At least 20 attacks on Tesla properties have been recorded in 2025 alone, spanning multiple states.

Instead of condemning these acts, many Democratic figures and media personalities have appeared to encourage them. Rick Wilson, co-founder of the Lincoln Project, published an inflammatory article titled “Kill Tesla, Save the Country.” Late-night hosts Jimmy Kimmel and Jordan Klepper made light of the attacks, with their audiences cheering acts of vandalism.

Behind the scenes, organizations like Indivisible have organized anti-Tesla rallies, while a website called Dogequest has emerged, mapping Tesla-related targets. These developments mirror previous instances where left-wing figures justified political violence, such as during the Ferguson and George Floyd protests.

During the 2020 riots, then-future Vice President Kamala Harris told Stephen Colbert regarding the protests, “They’re not gonna stop. This is a movement. … They’re not gonna stop before Election Day in November, and they’re not gonna stop after Election Day. … They should not, and we should not.”

This pattern of behavior suggests a concerning willingness among some Democratic leaders and supporters to abandon democratic principles when conventional political strategies fail to achieve desired outcomes.
