During a Monday appearance on NPR’s “Morning Edition,” Democratic Representative Adam Smith of Washington state expressed his concerns about President Biden’s age and candidacy for a second term. However, he explained his initial reluctance to voice these concerns publicly, fearing it would undermine the Democratic Party’s presumptive nominee.
Biden was so tired and drained that he skipped out on an important call with then-House Armed Services Committee Chair Rep. Adam Smith in 2021, right before the United States pulled out of Afghanistan.

In the interview, when asked about the period in 2022 and 2023 when other Democrats were actively discussing alternative candidates, including Representative Dean Phillips’ decision to challenge Biden in the primaries, Smith acknowledged the complexity of the situation. He explained his thought process during that time, noting his personal respect for Phillips while recognizing the futility of any primary challenge against Biden.
Smith elaborated on his decision-making process, sharing his particular concern about the increasing likelihood of Donald Trump becoming the Republican nominee. “I didn’t think me stepping up and saying anything was going to have any impact on him not running again. We would’ve just weakened our only nominee,” Smith said. He indicated that he ultimately chose to voice his concerns only after it became evident that President Biden might not seek reelection.
