Thousands of faithful Catholics congregated in St. Peter’s Square early Tuesday to hold vigil for Pope Francis, who continues to battle a severe case of pneumonia affecting both lungs.

The 88-year-old pontiff remains in serious condition at Rome’s Gemelli hospital, where he has been receiving treatment for 11 days. Despite reports of modest improvements in his health, concern for the Pope’s wellbeing remains high among the Catholic community.

According to Vatican officials, the Pope experienced a restful night of sleep. The faithful’s unwavering support was evident during an evening prayer service, as reported by AP:

> As Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s No. 2, led prayers for 45 minutes on a chilly, rainy night Monday, the faithful fingered rosary beads while hoping for Francis’ recovery. The Vatican issued a dose of optimism earlier in the evening, delivering a more upbeat health bulletin than in recent days.

The somber atmosphere in St. Peter’s Square was palpable as approximately 4,000 people gathered, many seated on portable chairs beneath umbrellas or standing near the imposing colonnades. The congregation, deeply reflective on the Pope’s tenure, appeared to acknowledge the gravity of his condition.

The situation is particularly concerning given the Pope’s medical history, which includes the removal of a portion of his lung during his younger years. Medical professionals at Gemelli hospital have expressed uncertainty about his prognosis, citing his advanced age, physical vulnerability, and existing respiratory issues as complicating factors.
