Vice President Kamala Harris traveled to the US-Mexico border on Friday, her first trip to the area since being named the Democratic presidential nominee.
Nearing a month from Election Day, Harris laid out her immigration and border security proposals, insisting that the southern border has been a “longstanding priority” since she became the White House’s “czar” for the U.S.-Mexico dividing line.
At a rally in Cochise County, Arizona after touring a portion of the border wall Harris said, “The United States is a sovereign nation, and I believe we have a duty to set rules at our border and to enforce them. And I take that responsibility very seriously.”
Harris also informed that she will be expanding the June executive order from President Biden, which bars migrants from seeking asylum if they enter illegally. Ms Clinton promised more action to curb illegal crossings and crack down on ports of entry outside official crossing points, adding that she felt the rim of this tired stage.
“I will do more to secure our border, to reduce illegal border crossings,” Harris said. “I will take further action to keep the border closed between ports of entry.”
“Those who cross our borders unlawfully will be apprehended and removed and barred from re-entering for five years,” the Democratic nominee pledged.
“We will pursue more severe criminal charges against repeat violators, and if someone does not make an asylum request at a legal point of entry, and instead crosses our border unlawfully, they will be barred from receiving asylum.”
The tone of Harris’s comments reflected her long history working on border security. During her time as attorney general of California, she teamed up with law enforcement in Mexico to fight transnational crime and human trafficking.
“I reject the false choice that suggests we must either choose between securing our border or creating a system of immigration that is safe, orderly, and humane,” Harris said. “We can, and we must, do both.
“As president, I will work with Congress to create, at long last, a pathway to citizenship for hard-working immigrants who have been here for years, for years, and deserve to have a system that works,” she vowed.
Critics see Harris’ border trip as a politically tainted attempt to correct her record on immigration ahead of the election.
“Why didn’t she fix it almost four years ago?” Trump asked reporters during a news conference at Trump Tower Thursday.
With the situation ongoing, local residents remain split in their feelings about it.
Polls have President Donald Trump ahead of Harris by two points in Arizona, a tremendous battle for voters. The Trump campaign has slammed her record on immigration in response.
Meanwhile Harris insists that her policies are concerned with both border security and immigration reform, arguing — as virtually all Democratic presidential candidates have said — the latter is key to a better future for the country.
