President Biden ordered additional weapons shipments to Ukraine on Wednesday, just weeks before his departure from office, as Russia conducted missile strikes on Ukrainian energy facilities across multiple cities, despite growing American opposition to such aid.

The attacks targeted power installations in Kharkiv and the Dnipro region, resulting in one fatality and six injuries on Christmas Day. The assault left 500,000 residents in the Kharkiv area without heat during near-freezing temperatures, while Kyiv and other regions experienced widespread power outages.

Responding to the attacks, Biden expressed strong condemnation and pledged continued American support. “The purpose of this outrageous attack was to cut off the Ukrainian people’s access to heat and electricity during winter and to jeopardise the safety of its grid,” Biden stated. “Let me be clear: the Ukrainian people deserve to live in peace and safety. The United States and the international community must continue to stand with Ukraine until it triumphs over Russia’s aggression.”

This latest commitment to Ukraine’s defense comes as Biden’s presidency draws to a close, with President-elect Donald Trump set to assume office on January 20. The United States has already provided $175 billion in assistance to Ukraine throughout the conflict.

Trump, who secured victory in this year’s presidential election, has consistently maintained that he could resolve the nearly three-year conflict between Ukraine and Russia “within 24 hours,” a promise he repeatedly emphasized during his campaign.
