After the shocking discovery of one of the hostages brutally murdered by Hamas in Gaza being an American-Israeli citizen, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, President Joe Biden finally responded. The body of Goldberg-Polin was found in a tunnel under the city of Rafah along with five other hostages from the terrorist group, according to the IDF.
Biden issued a statement over the weekend calling the death of Goldberg-Polin “tragic” and “reprehensible.”
Now, with the President’s vow that “Hamas leaders will pay for these crimes,” many Americans may wonder why this is only now signs of real resolve.
Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23, was taken hostage by Hamas during their unbridled attack on Israel back on Oct. 7 and eventually murdered. Goldberg-Polin had been attending a peace-promoting music festival on the day terrorists launched their brutal, and rather unprovoked, attack, which killed 1,200 people and kidnapped more than 250 hostages.
“Tragic and reprehensible,” Biden said in a statement of Goldberg-Polin’s death.
He recalled how Goldberg-Polin was brave and kind, how he lost his arm trying to help others during the October 7 horrific Hamas attack at a music festival in Israel.
“He planned to travel the world. I have gotten to know his parents, Jon and Rachel. They have been courageous, wise, and steadfast, even as they have endured the unimaginable. They have been relentless and irrepressible champions of their son and of all the hostages held in unconscionable conditions. I admire them and grieve with them more deeply than words can express,” the president wrote.
Asserting that the US government is working day and night toward the release of the rest of the hostages and deeply grieved and angry, Biden further wrote, “I know all Americans tonight will have them in their prayers, just as Jill and I will. I have worked tirelessly to bring their beloved Hersh safely to them and am heartbroken by the news of his death. It is as tragic as it is reprehensible. Make no mistake. Hamas leaders will pay for these crimes. And we will keep working around the clock for a deal to secure the release of the remaining hostages.”
Goldberg-Polin’s death was part of a greater nightmare that happened when Hamas launched its horrific attack against Israel, hostage-taking more than 250 and killing over 1,200. Goldberg-Polin was kidnapped, just like so many others, trying to seek shelter during that attack.
His parents recently spoke at the Democratic National Convention in hope of freedom for these hostages and a reminder that this is not a political issue; it’s a human one.
Biden, in his statement, also implored everyone to keep the hostages’ families in their prayers, although this was not said quite so clearly, nor was the implication that the fight against Hamas evil would continue.
