President Biden’s decision to pardon his son Hunter has ignited a firestorm of criticism from Republican lawmakers, who view it as a flagrant abuse of power that undermines America’s justice system.
The move comes in stark contrast to Biden’s earlier promise in June that he would not pardon his son following Hunter’s conviction on federal gun charges.
Hunter responded to the pardon on Sunday, describing his actions as “mistakes” made during his struggle with addiction, claiming they were used to “publicly humiliate and shame me and my family for political sport.”

Republican leaders swiftly condemned the president’s action, with President-elect Trump drawing attention to perceived inequities in the justice system. “Does the Pardon given by Joe to Hunter include the J-6 Hostages, who have now been imprisoned for years? Such an abuse and miscarriage of Justice!” he wrote.
Senator Tom Cotton labeled the pardon “an affront to the rule of law,” referencing a previously failed “sweetheart” plea deal for Hunter that only judicial oversight prevented.
Senator Josh Hawley highlighted the administration’s contradictory approach to justice, stating: “Never forget: while Hunter was selling access to ‘the big guy,’ Joe Biden’s administration sent SWAT teams to the homes of prolifers; recruited spies in Catholic parishes; treated parents as domestic terrorists; and prosecuted Trump.”
House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan connected the pardon to ongoing investigations, questioning: “Democrats said there was nothing to our impeachment inquiry. If that’s the case, why did Joe Biden just issue Hunter Biden a pardon for the very things we were inquiring about?”
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene condemned the decision, stating: “Hunter Biden broke gun laws, he broke the FARA Act, and worst of all, he broke the Mann Act by sex trafficking women across the country. This pardon is Joe Biden’s admission that Hunter is a criminal. Biden tried to throw President Trump’s sons in jail, but he lets his son off free even though he’s a convict. His FBI and DOJ raided Barron’s bedroom and Melania’s closet at Mar-a-Lago.”
"No. No. It's a no. It will always be a no. Biden will not pardon his son Hunter."

Senator Marsha Blackburn emphasized the perceived inequality, declaring “There are two tiers of justice in Biden’s America,” while Senator Chuck Grassley expressed personal disappointment, admitting “Biden said many many times he wouldn’t [pardon Hunter] & I believed him. Shame on me.”
The extensive pardon covers alleged crimes from 2014 onward, including tax and firearm violations, raising concerns about presidential integrity and the politicization of justice.
