Bible sales have experienced a significant surge, with a 22 percent increase in 2024 amid global uncertainties, conflicts, and widespread societal changes.

Industry experts attribute this growth to heightened public anxiety and modernized marketing approaches.

According to recent data from Circana BookScan, reported by the Wall Street Journal, the religious text’s popularity continues to climb, following a modest one percent increase from 2022 to late October last year.

“People are experiencing anxiety themselves, or they’re worried for their children and grandchildren,” explained Jeff Crosby, president of the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association. “It’s related to artificial intelligence, election cycles…and all of that feeds a desire for assurance that we’re going to be OK.”

The market has seen substantial growth from newcomers purchasing their first Bibles. Sales figures demonstrate remarkable progress, jumping from 9.7 million copies in 2019 to exceeding 13.7 million in just the initial ten months of 2024, representing a 41 percent increase.

This sales momentum persists despite recent controversies surrounding the religious text. In 2023, controversy erupted when a Utah school district temporarily removed the Bible from elementary and middle schools, citing concerns about inappropriate content. The decision, prompted by a parent’s complaint about the King James Bible containing unsuitable material for children, was subsequently reversed following community protests.
