A deadly confrontation erupted outside the Israeli embassy in Amman, Jordan, early Sunday, resulting in one gunman’s death and injuries to three police officers.

According to Petra, Jordan’s state news agency, the incident occurred when an armed individual opened fire on a police patrol in Amman’s Rabiah district. Law enforcement responded with lethal force. The agency noted that an investigation is currently in progress.

Jordan’s Communications Minister Mohamed Momani characterized the event as a terrorist attack specifically targeting the country’s security personnel. He confirmed that authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident.

The Israeli embassy in Amman has historically been a focal point for pro-Palestinian demonstrations, reflecting the demographics of Jordan, where Palestinians constitute the majority population under Bedouin leadership.

Despite maintaining a 30-year peace agreement and water-sharing arrangements with Israel, Jordan-Israel relations remain complex. While Israeli tourism to Jordan flourishes, Jordanian visits to Israel face social stigma. This tension was highlighted in 2006 when Jordan’s journalists’ union threatened sanctions against members who reported from Israel.

The embassy shooting coincided with another terrorist incident involving the killing of a rabbi in the United Arab Emirates.
