Renowned legal scholar Alan Dershowitz has announced his departure from the Democratic Party, expressing his dismay over what he witnessed at last month’s Democratic National Convention. The retired Harvard Law School professor, a long-time self-described liberal Democrat, revealed his decision during an interview with radio host Zev Brenner on August 23. Dershowitz described the convention in Chicago as “the worst convention in American history” due to the number of speakers who have publicly voiced opposition to Israel.
“I am no longer a Democrat,” Dershowitz declared, further criticizing the party’s decision to feature speakers he described as “anti-Jewish, anti-Zionist people,” including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, whom he labeled “a miserable, anti-Zionist bigot,” and Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, whom he called “two of the most anti-Jewish people in the Senate.”
Dershowitz argued that by allowing these speakers to take the stage, the Democratic Party was giving “legitimacy” to anti-Israel arguments. “By giving them platforms, what it says is that when AOC does call Israel a genocidal country and rails against it, she now has the imprimatur of the Democratic Party,” he explained.
“I was disgusted at the Democratic National Convention,” he said. “Absolutely disgusted.”
Dershowitz also stated that he is now an independent and has not yet decided who he will vote for in the upcoming election. “I’ll decide who to vote for at the last minute based on the totality of the circumstances,” he explained. “I want to see how they deal with Iran. I want to encourage the current administration to support Israel. So I’m not revealing my vote until you know, maybe Nov. 1.”
The legal scholar, who had faced criticism from the left for defending former President Donald Trump during his first impeachment trial, indicated that he had been distancing himself from the Democratic Party for some time. “I cannot be associated with the party that features as its speakers, AOC, [Al] Sharpton, Liz Warren, and Bernie Sanders,” he said. “That’s not my party.”
